Banners and Wall Hanging Making Workshop
The Field Cricket community arts team and artists Gemma and Andy, brought together people to be a part of a collaborative installation in the beautiful woodland at the Rural Life Living Museum. Using natural inks, whittled sticks and quills, and other materials of their own – and of course inspired by the Field Cricket – participants created and then hung murals and banners along a dedicated walk. Participants met an RSPB Field Cricket expert and learnt all about this remarkable creature as the nymphs prepare to emerge from their burrows in the spring, connecting artistic interpretation to wildlife.
“These remarkable creatures are among the rarest and most threatened invertebrates in the UK. They are 2cm long and chunky, black or brown with striking yellow wing-bases. They can’t fly, but can walk up to 100m a day. Their wing markings resemble intricate wrought-iron work, and the males make a loud call to attract a mate using “harps”, modified veins on their wings”
“There is something quite evocative about the soft chirping of a cricket on a warm summer’s evening. Unfortunately with field crickets on the verge of extinction we almost lost their song. However, there is hope and we have seen promising signs that the species can be brought back from the brink.”

Andy works across the fields of Architecture and Landscape, as a designer, artist and educator. With a strong interest in the landscape his professional practise has since focused on ‘place making’ projects, working with both urban and natural environments. Gemma is passionate about working in and taking inspiration from the natural environment. With a background in Fine Art and having developed her skills to embrace more craft-based mediums, Gemma enjoys working with a range of techniques, including drawing, printing, painting, collage, model-making, ceramics and appliqué.
