Come-a-wassailing
For this Back from the Brink event, artist Joanna Callaghan hoped the local community and some fantastic lanterns would help the rare Barberry Carpet Moth thrive – and bring the community together. But first we needed lanterns! Artist Linden McMahon was commissioned to run the lantern making workshop with the local community, who were enthused by the Back from the Brink species project aims to protect the rare moth they shared a home with.
With lanterns made, the Malmsbury Town Hall hosted the event celebrating the beautiful local moth.
The Ancient Anglo-Saxon tradition of wassailing usually meant either going door to door offering a hot drink for a gift, or singing to trees in orchards to encourage a good following harvest.

The walk was a ‘wassail’ for an abundance of this lovely little moth. It was a fun and creative family event and we were so pleased that the Deputy Mayor of Malmesbury was able to lead the walk.
