Drawing from nature
The sign-posted walk took people through farmland to visit arable field margins. People made the journey in their own time, absorbing the experience without being rushed. Experts from Back from the Brink and partner organisations were on hand, to guide and give valuable insights along the route. After the walk, participants settled onto a straw-bale in our farmyard ‘studio’ with a hot drink and some food, and created a postcard using the natural inks and tools available.
Researching and collecting plant materials has been a great journey of discovery for Amanda and the participants – and a valuable exercise in creating the inks for the event. Simple technologies such as a pestle and mortar gave participants the chance to draw with ground chalk and earth, and also to fabricate tools from natural materials like field stubble. The workshop was all about working freely to record observations and feelings.

I am an arts educator and really enjoy engaging people from all backgrounds and ages in experimental and open-ended drawing, painting, printing-making and construction; where the learner is at the heart of their learning experience.
“Time slows down - we can become more aware, and more curious, about the creatures and plants that live in that landscape. I wanted to harness that moment of connection and make it possible for participants to create images on postcards, using a palette of earth colours found in the North Downs.”
