Colour in the Margins, in Words
'Colour in the Margins, in Words' was run by professional poet Linden McMahon. All participants received a pamphlet of specially written poems – which they were then invited to add to through a series of fun and accessible activities.
Linden performed their poems, and audience members even stepped up to the mic with their own eco-poetry and stories.
Coming at a time when awareness of threatened species and ecosystems is growing, the event engaged with one of the great issues of our time: how to live sustainably in our environment.
“I grew up in Yorkshire, and the landscapes, plants and animals here are really close to my heart. Inspired by a residency in December 2018 and having spent time exploring the arable landscapes around Scarborough and beyond, I had written a set of four poems which was gifted to everyone that came along. The most exciting part, though, is that everyone was able to add their own writing to the booklet – the thing I was most looking forward to was hearing people’s memories and experiences of their local nature – and that part was fantastic. With awareness of threatened species and environmental destruction increasing, finding new ways to connect with the ecosystems around us is more important than ever, and art is a great way to do it: it can help us to find new ways of looking at the world so we can better take care of it.” – Linden McMahon
Event took place at
Scarborough Library
The Colour in the Margins project is working across England to save plants and animals threatened with extinction in our arable environments – and locals of all ages got involved by picking up their pens for a free drop-in arts event at Scarborough Library, with no previous writing experience necessary.
