Fans of the Forest – Guided Walk
As part of our Roots of Rockingham project, communities joined us for a guided walk through Fineshade Wood, learning about the rare species that live there – including the Chequered Skipper, which has been successfully reintroduced by this Back from the Brink project having being extinct in England since 1976!
Participants then got stuck into some art and creative writing, led by writer Linden McMahon, to make a fanzine (DIY magazine) about the species they found out about. Fun writing activities, collage, and lots of materials were used to get creative with!
Later, everyone returned to Fineshade Wood with their friends and family for a celebratory zine launch, complete with readings from the zine and copies of the booklet to take home. Plus arts, crafts and poetry activities for all!
Fans of the Forest - fanzine
We celebrated the amazing plants and animals found in the woods by asking them questions and imagining their answers. We gathered natural materials and interesting facts on a guided walk, and brought them together in collages, and writing, and painting with blackberry juice – each person creating a unique page for the zine.

Fineshade Wood
This zine was created by visitors to Fineshade Woods on 15th and 16th August 2019, from age 2 to 59 3⁄4. At a secret location somewhere nearby, Back from the Brink had recently reintroduced the Chequered Skipper, a butterfly which had been extinct in England since 1976...

Linden Katherine McMahon
Writer and Performer | From: London
I write poetry and fiction exploring connections between humans and non-human nature, re-imagining belonging and kinship, and celebrating queer joy and liberation. I aim to use poetry and stories towards building queer, feminist, decolonial, and sustainable futures through community and solidarity.
I was inspired by the curiosity and joy found in these artworks – I hope you will be too!
